Synthetic Biology for New Materials

  • Existing and emerging applications of synthetic biology
  • The emergence and disruption of new value chains to multiple markets
  • Contextual examples outlining application challenges and opportunities

Synthetic biology can broadly be described as the engineering of biological systems. We are now starting to see synthetic biology being used to manufacture products which have historically been made through chemical processing or traditional agriculture. Known as biomanufacturing, this shift is resulting in the emergence of new value chains. Biomanufacturing has the capability to produce meat without animals, eggs without chickens, fragrances without plants and leather without cows, greatly impacting a wide range of industries. There is also the capability to introduce new materials which cannot be manufactured in any other way. However, there are a number of issues which need to be addressed.

The topics covered are:

  • An introduction to synthetic biology
  • CRISPR: A tool for engineering biology
  • Engineering biology for food and agriculture
  • Engineering biology for human therapeutics
  • Engineering biology for specialty chemicals
  • Engineering biology for biobased polymers

This forum will give an introduction to how synthetic biology works, and how it can be leveraged to engineer new materials. Case studies in producing materials, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products will be discussed. This forum will detail the factors behind the rise of commercial biomanufacturing and the potential impact on different industries.

For those attending.
