Open Broadband – Broadband Access Abstraction (OB-BAA)

Demonstrated for the first time ever at Broadband World Forum 2018, OB-BAA enables standardized, automated and accelerated deployment of new cloud-based access infrastructure and services.

Tim Carey, Leader of OB-BAA, discussed the momentum gained within the work area

Broadband Access Abstraction under BBF’s Open Broadband initiative is an open source project that specifies Northbound Interfaces (NBI), Core Components and Southbound Adaption Interfaces (SAI) for functions associated with the access network devices that have been virtualized.

OB-BAA facilitates co-existence and seamless migration bringing the agility to adapt to a wide variety of software defined access models as they become defined by vendors and providers in a potentially vast market.

The Open Broadband reference implementation enables standardized, SDN-automated and accelerated deployment and management (e.g., configuration, reporting, alarms, performance monitoring and fault management) of new cloud-based access infrastructure and services.

Inherent in the OB-BAA project is the ability to pull differing access device types, including legacy implementations, together under a single network and service management & control umbrella to be exposed to management elements such as the SDN Management and/or Control and Element Management Systems.

The OB-BAA project is designed to be deployed within the BBF’s CloudCO environment as one or more virtualized network functions (VNFs). Because the NBI and SAI utilize standardized data models and the Core components of the OB-BAA project are designed as virtualized micro-services with specified interfaces, the components of the OB-BAA project can also be adapted and deployed in other virtualized environments.

Access OB-BAA software

The latest OB-BAA Release 2.0 – which is now ready for download – also expands the types of proprietary access nodes that can be managed and controlled via the BAA layer. This includes enabling additional adaptation of access nodes to meet individual network needs and providing examples of common functions that service providers are likely to perform when automating and managing their networks. These functionalities facilitate migration to cloud-based deployments for an increased number of service providers.

Release 2.1 of Open Broadband – Broadband Access Abstraction (OB-BAA) opens door for service provders to achieve dramatically simplified service provisioning and faster time-to-market. Click here for more information.

“OB-BAA is a key solution for an operator’s traditional access network to evolve towards an SDN/NFV-based network in the future. With its help, operators can build a more intelligent access network. Release 2.1 brings more detailed functionality for essential network operations and covers more types of access nodes, both of which greatly enhance the OB-BAA software. We look forward to future releases of OB-BAA where more and more functionality can be added to enable open and flexible solutions needed by the SDN/NFV-based network.”

Broadband Forum and ONF Ease the Path to Automated and Open Virtualized Access Networks

A new agreement between Broadband Forum and the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) sets forth how operators seeking to effectively use virtualization and open source to increase agility can leverage open source and standardization projects side-by-side to ease their migrations to automated access networks and enable seamless co-existence. Broadband Forum and ONF believe that many types of carrier deployments would benefit from the capabilities offered by OB-BAA and SEBA/VOLTHA. The cooperation between the two organizations takes their work to the next level, providing an effective and efficient path for operators to leverage the innovations and benefits of both initiatives while ensuring interoperability, high performance, scalability and maximum reliability. A whitepaper providing more detail on the relationship between OB-BAA and SEBA/VOLTHA open source projects can be found here.
